After dropping two paintings off at the framers, I popped into my local indie yarn shop to pick up another skein of the colourful Malabrigo Rios ‘Aros Iris’.
Montaña Arcoíris (commonly called Rainbow Mountain) is the incredible and colourful rock formation of the Andes mountain range in Peru.
Rios is the perfect merino wool for beanie and ideal for chilly sketching days, so squidgy and soft. This is my second beanie using this yarn, as my first was greatly admired by a friend and so given away!
I did a ‘double take‘ when I got back from my errands and put the yarn on the table next to the two paintings I’d been photographing earlier. The colours in the paintings were so similar to those in the yarn, I couldn’t believe it!
I’d been happily knitting and painting away over the last few weeks, totally unaware that the colours of the yarn had subconsciously crept into my latest artwork.
It did intrigue me, and so after further investigation I discovered the term ‘automatism’ which is a creative technique for producing artworks without thought, will or intervention from the conscious mind. These ideas in turn were a source of fascination for Surrealist writers and artists in the 1920’s (i)
One of the colours that appeared in my paintings is pink, which isn’t usually on my palette, but thanks to my mind working away quietly behind the scenes, I quite like it!
